PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — The man once described by police as armed and dangerous is now behind bars after a deadly robbery that turned a cellphone meetup into a homicide.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department announced Tuesday that Norrien Casminski was taken into custody in connection with the May 2 shooting on Northwest St. Lucie West Boulevard, off SW California Boulevard.

Police said the arrest was made in under 72 hours after a swift and coordinated operation involving patrol officers, Criminal Investigations Division detectives, and specialized units. Authorities credited assistance from several partner agencies, including the Fort Pierce Police Department, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Homeland Security, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The shooting occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. Saturday near a Walmart in the St. Lucie West area. Investigators said two 19-year-old men from Georgia were seated inside a Tesla in a shopping plaza parking lot for what was supposed to be a pre-arranged cellphone exchange. Instead, police allege suspects decided to rob the victims, and gunfire erupted during the encounter.

“What appears to have happened is the suspects realized it was not in their best interest and chose to take the phones and money by force,” Police Chief Leo Niemczyk said during an earlier press conference.

One of the victims, identified as 19-year-old Antoine Meyers of Georgia, was shot in the head and later died at the hospital. The second victim, Jermonti Johnson, was shot in the abdomen and is expected to survive, police said.

Investigators said the suspects fled the scene in a gold Chevrolet Cruze, which became a key break in the case. Surveillance video, license plate readers, and overnight investigative work spanning multiple scenes helped police track the vehicle and identify those involved. The investigation included detectives, SWAT teams, drone units, and crime scene personnel working through the night.

“The suspects at some point realized that it was not in their best interest, and they figured they’d just rob our victims and take their money from them and the phones from them instead of going ahead and having the phones activated,” Niemczyk said.

Casminski and another suspect, Martravious Blue Jr., were initially sought on attempted murder charges. After Meyers later died from his injuries, the case was elevated to a homicide investigation, and charges were upgraded to include second-degree murder, robbery with a firearm, and grand theft.

A third suspect, Sharlett Key of Port St. Lucie, who police say drove the suspects before and after the shooting, faces charges including accessory to murder, robbery with a firearm, and obstruction.

Niemczyk emphasized that the shooting was not random and warned about the dangers of informal transactions with unknown individuals.

“I think that when you live that type of lifestyle, and you engage other people who have criminal histories and pasts to do bidding for you, I think you’re taking unnecessary risks,” Niemczyk added.

Additional details on the arrest and the ongoing investigation are expected to be released during a press conference scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Port St. Lucie Police Department.
