Woman hit by gunfire while climbing through window in Fort Pierce burglary call

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — A reported burglary attempt on Sunday morning ended with a woman being shot, prompting an ongoing police investigation.

Officers with the Fort Pierce Police Department were sent to South 31st Street, off Delaware Avenue, at around 9:51 a.m. on May 3 after a homeowner called 911 to report that a woman was trying to break into the residence. When police arrived, they found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

According to early findings by police, the woman was attempting to climb through a window when a male acquaintance of the homeowner fired a gun, striking her. Investigators later learned the woman and the homeowner had a prior relationship.

The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. No charges have been filed, and police said the case remains an active investigation.
