When something works, you do it again.

That is exactly what Vivian Galego-Mendez, chair of the Key Biscayne Fund for Sunshine Kids, and her team of community event volunteers are doing with the second Night of Giving at the Ritz-Carlton.

The community-focused evening combines Mother’s Day shopping with philanthropy to create a fun, purpose-driven experience.

The Sunshine Kids Foundation is a nonprofit that has provided positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients since 1982.

For Galego-Mendez, it is all about bringing joy to children battling cancer.

“The proceeds from our local initiatives, especially this special Night of Giving, go toward the Sunshine Kids Foundation, which helps provide activities for kids battling cancer,” she said.

From 5 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, May 7, residents can shop for Mother’s Day at select merchants inside The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami. Participating stores will donate a portion of sales to the Key Biscayne Fund for Sunshine Kids.

The curated lineup of fine merchants includes Lilly Pulitzer, Sabbia Fine Jewelry, 120% Lino, Guadalupe Designs at Coastal Boutique and Bissinger’s Chocaletier.

Susan Jordon, regional manager with Lilly Pulitzer stores, said the company prides itself on maintaining a deep connection to the community.

“Our mission is to inspire confidence and optimism, inviting everyone to shine bright and stand out. The opportunity to participate in this event for the Sunshine Kids aligns with our brand’s approach of sharing sunshine by supporting causes that reflect our optimistic, colorful heritage.”

“We’re proud to support the Key Biscayne Fund for the Sunshine Kids, especially around Mother’s Day, a moment that highlights care, resilience, and family,” said Maria Teresa Zucca, manager at 120% Lino, another one of the participating retailers. “Our work is rooted in tradition and connection, and we’re honored to contribute to an initiative that brings light and support to these young lives.”

A $20 donation is required to attend, but for Galego-Mendez, it is a small price to support the Sunshine Kids Foundation. As an added incentive, attendees who visit all participating stores will be eligible to enter into a drawing for a gift certificate to use at The Ritz Carlton newly renovated spa.

All programs are offered free of charge to children undergoing treatment in hospitals across North America, including four in South Florida.

Funds raised through events like Night of Giving help send children on national trips, where they meet others facing similar diagnoses, attend sporting events and participate in art programs, holiday parties and in-hospital activities.

Galego-Mendez, vice president and managing broker of the Key Biscayne office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices EWM Realty, said that while it can be difficult to witness what these children endure, she finds comfort in bringing them moments of happiness.

“It’s beautiful to see them smile, and know they are not alone in their cancer battle,” she said.
