A New York man is facing charges related to EBT fraud in South Florida, authorities said.

Thajanhney Tapahrelle Thomas, 19, of Brooklyn, was arrested by Davie Police on Tuesday on charges including unlawful use of food assistance benefits, organized scheme to defraud, communications fraud, criminal misuse of personal information, use of scanning device, skimming device, or reencoder to defraud, possession of a skimming device, and petit theft, Broward jail records showed.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the arrest in a news release Wednesday.

Uthmeier said a Walmart employee had recognized a U-Haul vehicle in the parking lot that had matched a recent alert concerning fraudulent EBT purchases of baby formula.

Two people, including Thomas, got out of the vehicle and Thomas was seen buying several containers of baby formula using two separate EBT cards, Uthmeier said.

Thomas was detained as he exited the store and found in possession of two New York-issued EBT cards that authorities found were for accounts belonging to two different Florida residents.

“When we announced our Public Assistance Fraud Task Force, we promised to safeguard the taxpayers’ investment in services meant for the vulnerable,” Uthmeier said in the news release. “Any criminals thinking about coming to Florida to commit crimes should think twice. This is not New York, and we will come at you with the full force of the law.”

Records showed Thomas bonded out of jail. If convicted, he faces up to 21 years in prison.

The investigation was ongoing and more charges were expected.

“The Davie Police Department is appreciative of the support and collaboration with the Attorney General’s Office and our state law enforcement partners,” Davie Police Chief Stephen Kinsey said in a statement. “This partnership allowed Davie PD to arrest this prolific criminal who habitually committed fraud against numerous victims in more than one state. The message is clear, if you commit these crimes in Davie and in the State of Florida, we will identify you, investigate you, arrest you, and upon a conviction, ensure you go to prison.”
