A woman was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after she was bitten by a dog in Hialeah, police said.
According to Hialeah Police, the woman, 57, was a caretaker at a home at 1115 W. 50th Place when she was attacked by the dog.
Chopper 6 hovered over the scene, where officers gathered around the home.
Neighbors saw the commotion as several police officers arrived at the scene.
“I just thought because there’s an alertly man who lives there, I thought something happened to him,” said a neighbor. “But then half an hour later, I heard the helicopters and I knew something else was going on.”
The woman was then airlifted to the hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The woman received surgery but remains at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
NBC6 spoke with the woman’s family, who said she was bitten once in each arm but is expected to be OK.
The dog that bit her was removed and euthanized by Miami-Dade County Animal Services.
Miami-Dade County Animal Services released the following statement:
“Earlier today, Miami-Dade County Animal Services assisted the City of Hialeah Police Department regarding a dog attack to a female victim. The incident occurred inside the home located at 1115 West 50 Place, Hialeah, FL involving the family dog, an American Bulldog named Cesar who viscously attacked and mauled one of its owners who sustained injuries to her arms and legs. The victim was airlifted to Jackson Ryder Trauma by Fire Rescue and the owner surrendered the dog to Animal Services. Due to the dog’s aggressive and dangerous behavior, he was humanely euthanized. Animal Services wishes the victim a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”
Police said there was a second dog in the home, but they decided not to remove it.
What led up to the incident is under investigation.
