FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — Florida State Attorney Amira Fox is holding a news conference in Fort Myers.
The news conference began at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the state attorney’s office’s Fort Myers branch location.
An update at 1:20 p.m. from the state’s attorney’s office states that the conference will be on the State of Florida vs. Rolbert Joachin, a Haitian man accused of killing a woman with a mallet in early April.
Joachin, who, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, came to Florida illegally and is facing murder charges for the death of Nilufa Yasmine.
WINK News confirmed that Joachin was here under Temporary Protected Status, a program that allows people from countries like Haiti to live and work in the U.S. legally. He has since been stripped of that privilege and now faces deportation.
Coverage of Joachin has drawn national attention, as questions have arisen about immigration and who gets to stay in the U.S.
WINK News reporter Brinkley Hill will be in attendance, providing updates as they become available.
