FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—Florida Gulf Coast University is one of the educational institutions locked out of Canvas after hackers allegedly took control of the learning management platform’s login page.
FGCU released a statement Thursday evening saying the institution is aware of the outage and is working to determine whether any student, faculty or staff information was stolen. The university has confirmed the breach is not due to vulnerabilities in the FGCU security system.
Instructure, the global educational technology company that operates Canvas, recently experienced a cybersecurity incident that gave unauthorized access to private client data, according to a university message sent to students and staff. The press release states that the compromised information could include names, emails, home addresses and student or employee identification numbers, as well as private messages stored in the Canvas platform.
The university said it will continue to share updates as additional information becomes available.
