Florida trooper makes wet rescue of dog from Cape Coral canal

A Florida trooper braved a canal to rescue a lost dog, temporarily named K9 Valor, and ensured its care at a vet clinic.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — When a dog jumped into a canal, a Florida trooper got involved in a wet rescue.

Around 2:40 a.m. Thursday, a trooper fell into a canal filled with salt water in an effort to rescue a dog that fell into it in Cape Coral.

According to FHP, a trooper saw a lost Malinois dog running south on the sidewalk of Del Prado Boulevard, near SE 15th Terrace. Then, it ran down SW 16th Street and darted between houses before jumping into the water-filled canal.

FHP says the trooper located the dog whining and was concerned with its well-being. The trooper proceeded to make a makeshift slip lead to help the dog get to a floating dock area, but as he helped the dog onto the dock, the trooper fell into the canal.

Ultimately, FHP says, the trooper was able to safely take the dog to a veterinary clinic for an examination and a bath.

The veterinary clinic and the trooper are now taking care of the dog, which was temporarily named K9 Valor for its bravery, FHP said.

Troopers added that Lee County Animal Control was notified.

“Another reminder out that our State Troopers are always ready… whether it’s protecting people or saving those with paws!” FHP added.
