TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Florida Capital Bureau) – The state of Florida is getting ready for a world without pennies.
A bill on Governor Ron DeSantis’s desk outlines when stores need to round up or down any cash transaction to the nearest nickel.
Last year, the U.S. mint stopped producing pennies but they are still circulating.
Lorena Holley, the vice president of the Florida Retail Federation, said that this legislation will clear up any confusion between consumers and businesses.

“Surprisingly, a lot of consumers still like to use pennies, and again, like I said, we’ve seen a reduction in the penny and that is happening nationwide. Florida is one of the states leading the guidance but this is happening all over the country,“ Holley said.
These changes would not apply to card or digital transactions.
The governor has until next Friday to sign the bill.
