Former longtime Space Coast Congressman Bill Posey passed away this weekend. He was 78.
His successor for CD 8, Rep. Mike Haridopolos, made the announcement Sunday morning. Haridopolos honored Posey’s service as a Republican Congressman from 2009 to 2025 when he retired. He also praised his predecessor’s long political career in the Florida House of Representatives and then in the Florida Senate.
“Bill dedicated his life to serving the people of Florida and our nation with integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His passing marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades of leadership at the local, state, and federal levels,” Haridopolos said.
“He approached public office not as a path to personal recognition, but as a solemn responsibility to serve others honorably, faithfully, and effectively.”
Posey, who died Saturday, was first elected to the Florida House in 1992, where he held the HD 32 seat until 2000. He was then elected to the Florida Senate and held the SD 15 seat from 2000 to 2002 and then the SD 24 seat from 2002 to 2008 before advancing to Congress.
Teh tributes to Posey rolled in on social media Sunday.
U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody said in an X post she’s grieving Posey’s passing.
“Congressman Bill Posey was a friend, a true statesman, and a Florida legend who left our state better than he found it. His legacy of service to Florida and our nation will endure for generations. I had the pleasure of celebrating his granddaughter’s wedding with him just last weekend. He will be deeply missed,” Moody said.
U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds who is running for governor shared similar sentiments on an X post.
“My friend, Rep. Bill Posey, passed away last night at the age of 78. Bill served the people of Florida in Congress, the Florida Senate, and the Florida House. Erika and I are praying for his wife Katie, and his entire family. Rest in Peace Bill, you were truly one of the best!”
Posey had deep Space Coast roots that paralleled the region’s rise in prominence due to developments in space technology. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1947 as William “Bill” Joseph Posey, his family moved to the Space Coast in the nascent stages of the space program in 1956, and Posey himself would eventually get a job with McDonnell Douglas, one of the main companies involved in space program development.
He served on several local government and business Boards and panels, and his first election was to the Rockledge City Council in 1976. He also went on to become entrenched in the real estate industry in East Central Florida.
“His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched, the communities he strengthened, and the values he championed throughout his years of service,” Haridopolos said. “Those who knew Bill personally understood that beyond the titles and accomplishments was a kind, grounded, and deeply loyal man who loved his family above all else.”
U.S. Rep. Laurel Lee said Posey’s passing made her reflect on his career.
“A principled leader and dedicated public servant, Bill championed Florida’s Space Coast, fought for fiscal responsibility, and strengthened our nation’s space program over decades of service. His integrity and commitment to conservative values left a lasting impact on our state and country,” Lee said in a post on X.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson also paid respects to Posey on his X account.
“Bill Posey was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and public servant who dedicated his career to giving back to his Florida community — from the Rockledge City Council and the Florida State House and Senate to the U.S. House of Representatives,” Johnson said.
“As representative for Florida’s 8th Congressional District, he was a strong advocate for the Space Coast region and made a lasting impact as a member of the Financial Services and Science, Space, and Technology Committees.”
Posey’s cause of death was not released.
