Troop 340 fetes scouts

SEMINOLE — Two members of Scout Troop 340, Sierra Skinner and Johnathen Duncan, have achieved Scouting’s highest honor, the Eagle Scout rank.

Troop 340 is a coed troop. Sierra is the first female in the troop to achieve the Eagle Rank and one of the first in the country.

Skinner’s Eagle project was a butterfly garden for the Seminole United Methodist Church preschool. The benches have raised flower beds, and the stone pathway at the preschool playground now give the young students an area that feels peaceful while encouraging curiosity and observation.

Duncan’s project, also for the church’s preschool, was a concrete Trike Track. This mini-racing track provides an area for big fun for little wheels to play and compete safely.

The troop meets in the historic log cabin at 54th Avenue and Seminole Boulevard. Meetings are held every Tuesday at 7 p.m. when county schools are in session

Local student performs with Bocelli

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Hannah Auer of Seminole recently experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity — performing alongside world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli. She was one of more than 50 Belmont University orchestra students and members of the student performance group Chorale, who sang Oct. 16 at Belmont’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.

The students accompanied Bocelli and an all-star lineup of guest artists, including Trisha Yearwood, Michael W. Smith and CeCe Winans, during a special concert celebrating the launch of Belmont’s historic $700 million Hope Transforms campaign.

“This was a truly transformative experience for our students,” said Dr. Christopher Fashun, Belmont’s director of orchestras. “There are very few schools that provide this kind of access to undergrads. You just don’t see students — sometimes even in their first or second year — getting to collaborate with professionals at this level. That’s just not normal.”
