Gas prices in Florida are moving lower after climbing to their highest level in nearly four years last week, according to AAA — The Auto Club Group.
The state average rose 20 cents per gallon last week, peaking Thursday at $4.50 — the highest daily average since July 2022 — following sharp gains in the futures markets over the previous two weeks.
Prices then eased through the weekend. Sunday’s price was $4.43 per gallon. By Monday morning, the state average dipped further to $4.40 per gallon. That’s 6 cents more than a week ago, 20 cents more than about a month ago and $1.48 more than this time last year.
Market conditions shifted late last week amid renewed optimism about U.S.-Iran negotiations, with reports that talks could lead to a gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz helping to push prices down 6%.
Those declines can directly affect prices, AAA said, since about half of gasoline’s price is determined by oil prices.
“The fuel market remains headline-driven and extremely volatile, making it difficult to predict what drivers will pay at the pump this Summer,” AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins said in a statement.
Florida’s lowest gas prices are in Pensacola, where motorists are paying an average $4.11 per gallon for regular gas, followed by the Crestview-Fort Walton Beach area ($4.14) and Panama City ($4.15).
The most expensive gas, meanwhile, is in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area, where a regular gallon of gas costs $4.57 on average, followed by Naples ($4.49) and Gainesville ($4.48).
Nationally, Florida is in the middle of the pack as far as gas prices go. The priciest fuel is in California, as usual, where motorists are shelling out $6.16 per gallon on average, followed by Washington ($5.76) and Hawaii ($5.65).
The cheapest gas is in Oklahoma ($3.95), followed by Mississippi ($4.98) and Arkansas ($4).
