SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Tampa Police have released video of officers breaking up a teen “takeover” Friday night near Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.
Police said 22 people between the ages of 12 and 21 were arrested.
Officers responded in force to what the department described as “significant disruptions” downtown.
Police say charges connected to the arrests included affray, possession of narcotics, resisting without violence and unlawful possession of a weapon. Investigators say officers also seized two firearms and one vehicle tied to the incident.
Several of those arrested were juveniles, according to police. The youngest person arrested was 12 years old.
“This type of reckless and criminal behavior will not be tolerated in our city,” Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement. “What began as a large gathering quickly escalated into disorder and activity that placed others at risk.”
Police say similar large gatherings involving teens have become a growing concern in communities across the country heading into the summer months.
The department also pointed to youth programs, including PAL’s Midnight Basketball and Stay and Play, which offer extended evening hours and activities at select city parks during the summer.
