Tampa City Council Member Bill Carlson will formally kick off his campaign for Tampa Mayor with a pitch to voters rooted in his watchdog reputation on government spending, infrastructure and City Hall management.
Carlson’s campaign will host a kickoff event the evening of Tuesday, May 26, at Pane Rustica in South Tampa.
The event marks Carlson’s first major public campaign gathering since he officially entered the 2027 Tampa Mayor’s race last month with a launch video styled after the sitcom “Modern Family.”
Though humorous in nature, Carlson sharply critiqued City Hall and said he saw “mismanagement first-hand” under Mayor Jane Castor and her predecessor, Bob Buckhorn, who is seeking a return to City Hall now that his term limit has expired.
“I’m looking forward to seeing neighbors, friends, new faces, and most of all YOU there. Come as you are. Bring who you love,” Carlson said in a social media post promoting the event.
Carlson, who represents South Tampa’s District 4, has served on the City Council since 2019 and has built a reputation as a persistent critic of city spending, governance and long-term planning. He is also President of the public affairs firm Tucker/Hall and has emphasized his business background and civic involvement as part of his campaign.
Carlson’s campaign will test whether his watchdog reputation can resonate with voters citywide in a race against Buckhorn, fellow City Council Member Lynn Hurtak, Ryan Edwards, Anthony Gilbert Jr., Gary Hartfield, Alan Jared Henderson, Julie Magill, Tres L. Rodmon, Taryn Sabia and Reginald Strachan.
The campaign also tests whether Carlson can successfully cast himself as an outsider to Tampa’s political establishment despite serving nearly a decade on City Council. Carlson has highlighted his professional experience as an asset, arguing his work with businesses, civic groups and community organizations gives him the background needed to manage city government.
Carlson’s run also comes with scrutiny over his political associations. Carlson is a self-described progressive who has also drawn support from conservative-aligned figures.
Florida Politics previously reported on ties between Carlson and a 501(c)(4) organization, Leading Tampa, which listed the same address as Tucker/Hall. The organization raised questions about transparency because 501(c)(4) groups are not required to disclose donors. That scrutiny later extended to Carlson’s appointment of Tarah Bluma to Tampa’s Budget Advisory Board. Bluma is one of the officers of Leading Tampa and a supporter of President Donald Trump.
The Tampa Mayor’s race is scheduled for March 2, 2027. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to an April 27 runoff.
