Fans of Alanis Morissette will soon have the chance to experience her groundbreaking music in an entirely new way as Slow Burn Theatre Company presents the Tony Award-winning musical Jagged Little Pill from June 13-28 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
Running at the company’s’s Amaturo Theatre, the production closes Slow Burn Theatre’s 16th season with a story that combines raw emotion, powerful performances and the unforgettable soundtrack that made Morissette a defining voice of the 1990s.
Inspired by Morissette’s iconic album of the same name, the musical follows the seemingly perfect Healy family as hidden struggles begin to surface. Through themes of identity, addiction, trauma, mental health and family pressure, the show explores what happens when people can no longer hide behind appearances. The production is driven by a score packed with Morissette classics including “Ironic,” “You Oughta Know,” “Hand in My Pocket” and “All I Really Want.”
The musical features a book by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and has earned major acclaim since debuting on Broadway, winning two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, eight Outer Critics Circle Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
“Jagged Little Pill is a story about what happens when the image of perfection starts to crack, and the courage it takes to face what’s underneath,” said Patrick Fitzwater, Slow Burn Theatre Company’s co-founder and director. “Alanis Morissette’s music gives voice to that tension in a way that is raw, honest, and deeply human.”
Leading the cast are Kimberly Doreen Burns as Mary Jane Healy, Lauren Chanel as Frankie Healy, Isaac Kueber as Nick Healy and Ben Sandomir as Steve Healy.
The production also includes an open-caption performance on June 21 at 2 p.m., helping make the show accessible to a wider audience.
