On Wednesday, April 29, the almost full moon danced among the clouds over Biscayne Bay as the evening breeze delighted the attendees at the 11th annual ZipOde Finale at Vizcaya.
Approximately 1,300 ZipOdes were submitted from nearly 90 zip codes in southeast Florida. Key Biscayne’s 33149 was applauded for the most entries from one zip code with 108! Congratulations to everyone on the island who submitted a ZipOde to make the 33149 shine!
A ZipOde is a five-lined poem based on your zip code where you write the number of words in each line corresponding to the digits of your zip code.
Fifty finalists were chosen to read at the Vizcaya event. Among them was Debbie Wanninkhof, who is the Head Inspirer of the Key Biscayne Poetry Share.
“I was thrilled and honored to be chosen to share my ZipOde about pelicans in flight,” Wanninkhof said. “ZipOdes expressed thoughts and feelings about the Miami River, the ocean, the bay, boating, beach days, mangos and iguanas, among other topics.”
The event was sponsored by WLRN and O, Miami, our city’s premier poetry platform whose goal is for everyone to experience a poem in the 305 and beyond during the month of April, National Poetry Month.
