Avianca, the national flag carrier of Colombia, announced it intends to add service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the South American nation’s capital of Bogotá.

The routes the airline announced this week also include the start of daily flights out of Miami International Airport to the Colombian city of Barranquilla.

The new South Florida flights will start June 1, the airline said in a news release. Ticket sales started Friday.

Earlier this year, Avianca announced service from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood to Nicaragua.

Avianca did not refer to Spirit, the Dania Beach-based budget carrier that halted service May 2 after failing to secure a U.S. Government bailout. Spirit operated flights to and from South Florida to both Colombian cities and five others as part of a broad network of foreign destinations that included Latin America and the Caribbean.

“At a time when air connectivity has become a key driver of economic growth and tourism, Avianca, part of Abra Group, continues to strengthen its operations to connect more people with opportunities, support business growth and facilitate new travel experiences across the continent,” Avianca said.

The latest South Florida additions include:

For Bogotá-Fort Lauderdale, the company is adding a daily frequency, boosting service to two flights a day.
For Barranquilla-Miami, service will increase from three times a week to daily service or a single flight a day.

The airline said it now operates more than 700 daily flights and served nearly 37 million passengers last year. Through the first quarter of this year, Avianca has carried 14,706 passengers to and from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, according to airport data.

Using Airbus A-320s and Boeing 787-8 jetliners, Avianca said it operates more than 400 weekly flights to and from the U.S. It  connects 14 cities across Latin America including Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Las Vegas, that latter of which is a seasonal destination.
