ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla (CBS12) — St. Lucie County commissioners spent Tuesday morning discussing the proposed Hutchinson Island Gateway project during an informal Board of County Commissioners meeting that began at 9 a.m., focusing on how the county could enhance the island’s main entrance while balancing development concerns.
The proposal centers on creating a more defined “gateway” to Hutchinson Island, which officials noted is accessed by a single primary entrance stretching across 26 miles of coastline. Plans discussed include new signage, landscaping, and potential design features meant to create a stronger sense of arrival for residents and visitors.
County staff and stakeholders emphasized the effort would rely heavily on public-private partnerships, with officials noting the goal is to move forward with minimal public funding. Commissioners were also asked to consider taking a lead role in coordinating with the Florida Department of Transportation, particularly on interstate and right-of-way signage along I-95 and nearby roadways.
Several design concepts were presented, including multiple styles and potential locations for gateway features. Two main partnership options were discussed: a smaller-scale electronic signage plan that would require FDOT approval, and a larger monument-style entrance feature.

In addition to traditional gateway elements, the discussion briefly touched on more creative ideas to enhance the entrance experience, including a themed attraction concept. Suggestions ranged from a pirate-themed photo park to decorative cannons and other tourism-focused features aimed at creating a memorable first impression for visitors.
