MELBOURNE, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard reported Tuesday night that 11 people had been rescued from a plane that crashed into the ocean about 80 miles off the coast of Melbourne earlier in the day.

The Coast Guard and Federal Aviation Administration had initially said only 10 people were on board the plane when it crashed at around 12:05 p.m.

The FAA and Coast Guard announcements disagreed on the exact location of the crash, with the Coast Guard saying it was 80 miles off the coast of Melbourne, while the FAA said the twin-engine Beechcraft BE30 crashed into the ocean about 50 miles east of Vero Beach Regional Airport. 

According to the FAA, the plane had taken off from Marsh Harbour Airport and was on its way to Grand Bahama International Airport when it crashed.

While the FAA did not release any information about the condition of the 10 people aboard the plane when it crashed, at 3 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard posted on social media that: “Reportedly, all 10 people are accounted for & are being brought to EMS for further eval. The cause of the crash is unknown.”

At 7:02 p.m., the Coast Guard posted an update on X that said 11 people, not 10, were on board when the plane crashed.

On Wednesday morning, Melbourne Orlando International Airport confirmed in an email that the crash victims were brought to the airport “for triage and transport to local hospitals.”

Airport public information officer Melissa Naughton said in the email that, “All the rescued individuals were taken to local hospitals, some with injuries and some for further assessment.”

As of Wednesday morning, officials had not released any information about the severity of any injuries or the current condition of the individuals involved in the crash.

Along with airport operations employees and the Melbourne Airport Authority Police Department, Naughton said other agencies that responded to the crash included the Melbourne Fire Department, Brevard County Fire Rescue, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Coastal Health Systems.

FAA officials say the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
