A mother was arrested on Tuesday after her 6-year-old son shot himself with her gun in Southwest Miami-Dade, deputies said.

Myeisha Smith, 33, was charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the incident was reported before 4 p.m. in the 10100 block of West Circle Plaza in West Perrine after Smith heard a gunshot go off inside her home.

An arrest report said Smith called 911 after her on was shot and said she was taking him to the hospital.

Her son was then airlifted to the HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, the report said.

Aerial footage captured the child being airlifted.

After he son was in the hospital, Smith, the report said, told deputies that she left her gun unattended in her bedroom and left her son alone with it.

Deputies said her son then grabbed the gun and shot himself in the shoulder.

Smith was arrested and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Her child remains in stable condition.

Under Florida law, gun owners must secure their guns and keep them out of reach, away from children. Failure to do so can result in a second-degree misdemeanor.
