WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCTV) – Law enforcement from across the nation is gathering in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to honor men and women who gave their lives while serving their communities.
363 names will be read aloud, including the name of a local Florida Highway Patrol trooper who passed away last fall.
Craig Gaines died from medical complications after a broken leg. He was hurt while working on the sidelines of a Florida A&M University football game.
His sacrifice has been honored at the local and state levels already.
Now, his name is etched on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
His name reading later tonight is part of the annual candlelight vigil.

The vigil is just one of many events during National Police Week.
Several Tallahassee police officers are riding in the Police Unity Tour, joining law enforcement across the country cycling to Washington.
TPD shared photos from the ride on social media on Wednesday and said each mile represents remembrance and respect for fallen officers.
