JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County — Jacksonville firefighters recently completed passenger vehicle rescue training aimed at preparing them for complex crash scenes.

According to the Jacksonville Fire Department, the advanced course teaches first responders how to safely manage, stabilize and extricate victims involved in passenger vehicle accidents.

During the training, firefighters practiced using hydraulic rescue tools, power tools, lifting equipment and stabilization struts. The department said those tools help crews control hazards, secure the scene and carry out vehicle extrication operations more efficiently.

Fire officials also offered advice for anyone who may become trapped in a vehicle after a crash.

They said the most important thing to do is stay as calm as possible and remain inside the vehicle until first responders arrive. Getting out before the vehicle is stabilized could cause it to shift or fall.

The department said that is why firefighters train for these situations, which require skilled maneuvers and specialized tools.
