THE PULSE NIGHTCLUB TORN DOWN, ALL TO MAKE WAY FOR THIS, A MEMORIAL MEANT TO HONOR THE 49 PEOPLE KILLED IN THE NIGHTCLUB ATTACK BACK IN 2016. AND TODAY WE ARE EXPECTING TO GET AN UPDATE ON WHAT THAT MEMORIAL COULD ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE. WESH TWO BOB HAZEN IS LIVE AT THE FORMER PULSE NIGHTCLUB SITE BOB. THE CITY OF ORLANDO IS MEANT TO HAVE 60% OF THAT DESIGN FINALIZED BY THIS AFTERNOON. AND SHOWING US WHAT THEY HAVE COME UP WITH SO FAR. RIGHT NOW, THE WHOLE SITE, ALL YOU CAN SEE FROM THE OUTSIDE IS THIS PURPLE FENCE STRETCHING AROUND THIS SITE ALONG ORANGE AVENUE AND ESTHER STREET. BUT THE CITY DID GIVE US SOME UPDATED RENDERINGS, PICTURES OF WHAT THEY THINK THIS WILL LOOK LIKE WHEN IT’S ALL DONE FOR THIS MEMORIAL. THOSE IMAGES CAME OUT BACK IN MARCH. THEY INCLUDE WHAT THEY’RE CALLING THE ANGEL ELLIPSE. IT’S A COLONNADE AROUND THE PLAZA WITH THE NAMES OF THE 49 VICTIMS AND A TRIBUTE TO EACH OF THEM. THE DESIGN ALSO INCLUDES A REFLECTING POOL WHERE THE CLUB’S DANCE FLOOR USED TO BE. IT ALL LEADS UP TO AN OBELISK SHOWING THE DATE OF THE ATTACK. THERE’S ALSO A PRIVATE GATHERING SPACE SURROUNDED BY MULTI-COLORED GLASS PANELS AND A VISITOR’S PAVILION. IT HAS BEEN ALMOST TEN YEARS SINCE THE ATTACK IN THE CITY OF ORLANDO. BOUGHT THIS SITE THREE YEARS AGO, WHEN THE ONE PULSE FOUNDATION COULDN’T FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO ABOUT A MEMORIAL EVENTUALLY DISSOLVED. TODAY, THE PEOPLE DESIGNING AND BUILDING THAT PERMANENT MEMORIAL WILL SHARE THE MOST RECENT PLANS THAT SHOULD INVOLVE MORE DETAILED ASPECTS OF THE MEMORIAL AND SOME OF THE INTERIOR FEATURES AS WELL. THAT’S GOING TO BE HAPPENING AT 4 P.M. AT ORLANDO CITY HALL. IT WILL ALSO BE ONLINE, VIRTUAL FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO WATCH THERE AND EVEN GIVE PUBLIC COMMENT. Orlando officials are set to unveil updated plans for the permanent memorial at the former Pulse nightclub site, nearly two months after the building was torn down. Currently, the site is surrounded by a purple fence. In March, the city shared updated images of the memorial design, which includes the “Angel Ellipse,” a colonnade around the plaza displaying the names of the 49 victims as a tribute. The design also features a reflecting pool where the club’s dance floor once stood, leading up to an obelisk marking the date of the attack. Additional elements include a private gathering space surrounded by rainbow glass panels and a visitor’s pavilion. It’s been almost 10 years since the deadly attack. The City of Orlando bought the site three years ago, when the onePulse Foundation couldn’t figure out what to do with a memorial and eventually dissolved. Today, the design and construction teams will present the latest plans at Orlando City Hall at 4 p.m., which are expected to include more detailed aspects of the memorial and its interior features. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall and is expected to take about a year to complete.
