TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — One of the four men found guilty in the deadly shooting of Jacksonville rapper Julio Foolio outside a Tampa hotel in June 2024, Sean Gathwright, cried in the courtroom during the sentencing phase of his trial on Tuesday.
Gathwright’s sister testified, saying she and her brother grew up together and were never apart.
“I just miss my brother,” she said.
Gathwright began to cry after his sister described their childhood and her continued communication with him. She confirmed they grew up with positive role models.
He took the stand after his sister and mother spoke about his upbringing.
“I’m not here to dispute anything,” Gathwright said. “I’m just here to be a man and take responsibility and express my feelings.”
He said he has taken part in programs while in prison and “read the Bible cover to cover.”
“I feel very remorseful,” Gathwright said. “This is a terrible situation. It has been a traumatic experience.”
While being cross-examined by Assistant State Attorney Scott Harmon about whether he felt remorse after the shooting, Gathwright said he did not remember how he felt.
Gathwright, Isaiah Chance, Davion Murphy and Rashad Murphy were all charged in connection with the shooting of the rapper, whose real name is Charles Jones, on May 8.
The sentencing of Alicia Andrews, the first defendant convicted in the murder case tied to Jones, was on hold as of Monday.
