A garden of red poppies, crafted from fiberglass, will be unveiled in downtown Fort Lauderdale, commemorating the start of Memorial Day weekend in South Florida.

The Poppy Project, a public art program from Henderson Behavioral Health, is designed as “a visual display of remembrance and patriotism which honors veterans while raising awareness and funds for critical mental health services,” according to the nonprofit provider of mental health and substance use disorder services.

The poppy became a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers because the flowering plants were the first to bloom after World War I in the battlefields of Flanders, Belgium, and Northern France.

The first Poppy Garden, with flowers standing at 5 and 6 feet tall, will debut at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at Tunnel Top Plaza, 601 E. Las Olas Blvd. There are plans to install more at other parks and venues coinciding with July Fourth and Veterans Day. The kickoff event is free and open to everyone. Coconut Creek: 9 a.m. May 25 at Veterans Park, 3550 Lyons Road. City commissioners, dignitaries, guest speakers and the Coconut Creek Police Department Honor Guard will be part of the annual Memorial Day Ceremony. Coral Springs: 9 a.m. May 25 at Veterans Park, 8601 Royal Palm Blvd. The city, in partnership with the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, is planning a ceremony with mayoral remarks, the sounding of taps, presentation of colors, wreath placement, volley salute and more. Davie: 10:30 a.m. May 25, with a parade starting just west of the Davie Fire Administration building, 6901 Orange Drive, then heading east on Orange Drive to Southwest 65th Way and north to the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, 4201 Rodeo Way. The event, hosted by the town and Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America), also includes a ceremony at 11 a.m., with guest speakers and dignitaries, presentation of colors, folding and presentation of the U.S. flag and more. Deerfield Beach: 10 a.m. May 23 at The Historic Butler House, 380 E. Hillsboro Blvd. Hear remarks from community leaders and take part in a moment of reflection. Fort Lauderdale: 9 a.m. May 25 at Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery, 2001 SW Fourth Ave. The Memorial Day Ceremony includes the Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds featuring James Perkowski, a parade of colors, veterans’ recognition, Armed Forces salute, a dove release, Fort Lauderdale Police Honor Guard gun salute and more. Hallandale Beach: 9:30 a.m. May 25 at the Hallandale Beach City Cemetery, 801 NW Seventh Ave., starting with the placing of flags on veterans’ gravesites. Lauderhill: 8:30 a.m. May 25 at Veterans Park, 7600 NW 50th St. The Memorial Day Service, presented by City Commissioner S. “Ray” Martin and the Northwest Lauderhill Neighbors Association, will allow families to share the names of their loved ones and join the community in paying respect to fallen military members. Pompano Beach: 9 a.m. May 25, with a parade starting at Wells Fargo, 2401 E. Atlantic Blvd., and proceeding to the City of Pompano Beach Cemetery, 400 SE 23rd Ave. The event, presented by the city’s Parks & Recreation Department and Public Works, will also include a ceremony after the parade. Boca Raton: 9 a.m. May 25 at the Boca Raton Cemetery & Mausoleum, 451 SW Fourth Ave., there will be a ceremony with a processional featuring Boca Raton police and fire rescue honor guards and Boca Raton High School NJROTC Color Guard & Cadets, along with a presentation of colors, patriotic medley, speakers, flag-folding ceremony and more. Boynton Beach: The Boynton Beach Veterans Task Force will have two events at Boynton Beach Memorial Park, 1611 S. Seacrest Blvd. At 8 a.m. May 22, volunteers can help place flags at veterans’ graves. Lake Worth: There will be two events on May 25 at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 S. State Road 7.
