FSU baseball vs. Miami: Seminoles walk off the Hurricanes

The Seminoles have walked off Miami 7-6 in the 11th inning as Brayden Dowd worked a bases-loaded walk with two outs. They scored six runs after the eighth inning to complete the comeback win.

FSU got the leadoff man on in the seventh, but they were unable to take advantage as Ben Barrett struckout and Carter McCulley grounded into a double play, FSU’s second of the game. They are 2-12 with runners on.

The Semioles are in trouble with Miami adding two more runs to their lead in the top of the seventh. FSU, which has not scored since the second inning, has nine outs to score five or more runs.

Miami has taken advantage of the bases-loaded opportunity, scoring two more runs to go up five runs in the top of the seventh. FSU allowed one run on a double play, before a two-out single drove in one run to extend the rally.

The Hurricanes scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead, hitting a three-run homer and scoring another run on a fielder’s choice. FSU got lucky to end the inning when Miami stole second, and Nathan Cmeyla’s throw went into center, but Brayden Dowd threw him out at second when he got too far from the base.

Miami’s productive fourth inning continued when Gabriel Milano scored on a ball hit to FSU first baseman Ben Barrett, who went home, but his throw was inaccurate, and Milano easily scored. The batter was safe at first and there is just one out in the inning.

The Hurricanes have taken their first lead of the day with a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning off Wes Mendes. They started the inning with consecutive singles, and FSU has yet to retire a batter in the inning. Miami has five hits over the past two innings as they have started to get to Mendes.

Miami starter Rob Evans has settled in after giving up the home run to Hunter Carns and walking Nathan Cmeyla. The third inning was his best yet, with him picking up two more strikeouts. He has given up just one hit through three innings and one walk with three strikeouts.

Wes Mendes is doing it all for FSU today. Miami got its first hit of the game to start the inning before a one-out double put two runners in scoring position with FSU up 1-0. Mendes escaped the jam all by himself, catching a line drive and getting the runner at third to complete the double play and end the inning. He has five strikeouts already and has thrown 45 pitches.

FSU got one run in the second on a home run by Hunter Carns, but was unable to take advantage of another chance. Nathan Cmeyla walked with no outs, but was erased on a fielder’s choice before Miami ended the inning with a double play to end the inning. The homer was the first hit of the game by either team.

The Seminoles have opened the scoring, with Hunter Carns hitting a solo home run to start the second inning. It is his fifth homer of the season, and his third against Miami in just four career games.

Wes Mendes had an excellent second inning, retiring the side with two strikeouts. He threw just 11 pitches in the inning and already has four strikeouts.

Miami first baseman Jake Ogden made some waves this week when he was asked about facing FSU pitcher Wes Mendes by a reporter. Ogden asked who he was because he did not know anything about him. It was clearly a lie, after the two faced off last season, with Ogden going 1-4 with a walk and a strikeout, as Mendes allowed six runs over 4.0 innings as FSU won the game.

Mendes got the better of him to start Friday’s game, getting him to ground out to second for the first out of the game. The play fired up FSU’s fans, who started changing “Who is Wes Mendes?” after the play.
