Florida Rep. Angie Nixon reprimanded for outburst over redistricting vote

  • May 15, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A boisterous demonstration on the Florida House floor two weeks ago has led to a reprimand by the House Rules and Ethics Committee of Angie Nixon, a House Rep. (D-Jacksonville) and U.S. Senate candidate.

Nixon reportedly shouted through a megaphone protesting the new congressional map during a hearing. While the representative was in the meeting room, she was not allowed to speak.

After the outburst, Rules and Ethics Committee Chair Sam Garrison limited talking to only committee members but he did reference a written statement Nixon provided. Garrison called the reprimand “appropriate and necessary,” while minority leader Fentrice Drickell criticized his decision not to allow Nixon to speak.

“No one should take pleasure in reprimanding a fellow member. It stinks. I hate it,” Garrison said. “My responsibility as Chair is to protect the House, protect this institution.”

Driskell shared that they should put themselves in her shoes.

“If any of us in the future find ourselves standing where she stands, we would want the opportunity to defend our actions.”

Nixon released a statement after Thursday’s meeting saying that it’s her duty. “I would not be doing my job if I sat silently while Governor DeSantis and Florida Republicans stripped away their voice and their ability to elect candidates they believe in.”

Thursday’s reprimand is like a formal warning and the committee said that if Nixon violates more policies, she could face censure.
