Jacksonville police are taking part in a statewide campaign targeting those not wearing a seat belt.
The “Click It or Ticket” initiative began Friday and will continue through the Memorial Day travel period, ending May 26.
Hundreds of law enforcement agencies will be watching for drivers or passengers not wearing a seat belt, which is required in Illinois.
“Buckle up every trip, every time. Seat belts save lives, and we are committed to keeping our roads safe,” Jacksonville Police Chief Doug Thompson said.
While seat belt use in Illinois is estimated at 93%, 9,758 people who died in crashes in 2024 were not wearing seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Most of the fatalities were among those ages 18 to 34.
The “Click It or Ticket ” initiative is being funded with federal funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
