TAMPA, Fla. (CBS12) — Two Florida men were convicted in federal court in connection with the drug-related death of a University of South Florida student, prosecutors announced Friday.

A federal jury found 38-year-old Miguel Cintron and 22-year-old Darrius Gustafson, both of Tampa, guilty of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Each man now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, with the possibility of life behind bars, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to investigators with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Opioid Overdose Investigations Section, the case stems from a February 16, 2024, incident in which the defendants sold a lethal amount of fentanyl to a USF student. Authorities say the student later died as a result of the overdose.

As part of the investigation, detectives executed a search warrant at Cintron’s home on April 10, 2024. Officials say they recovered firearms, ammunition, more than $200,000 in cash, and multiple illegal narcotics.

Officials say the convictions highlight ongoing efforts to combat the fentanyl crisis and hold drug traffickers accountable for overdose deaths.

Sentencing for both men will be scheduled at a later date.
