FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)— A 71-year-old veteran received the keys to a brand-new home in Dunbar, built in just 44 days by community volunteers who wanted to give back to someone who served his country.
Lewis Freeman is a proud new homeowner in the neighborhood where he was born and raised. Freeman served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, then suffered a stroke in 2015.
Unable to work and living on a fixed income, his rental home was sold unexpectedly. He felt hopeless.
“You know it’s normally…It’s lonely. Being in a world that nobody cares,” Freeman said.
But Lee BIA Builders cared, Pulte Homes cared, the City of Fort Myers and many more in the community cared. They came together to build a two-bedroom, two-bath home to give to Freeman for free.
“There’s been hundreds and hundreds of people who have worked on this home, subcontractors, individuals, people from everywhere, who have donated their time and their money and their resources to make this dream come alive for Mr. Freeman,” said Randy Thibaut, co-founder of Lee BIA Builders Care.
The home was personalized to fit Freeman’s needs. Builders added ramps and lower steps into the shower, front entry and back porch so Freeman could age in place comfortably.
They also included touches tailored to his interests. Freeman likes to play dominoes, so a porch was designed specifically for him to enjoy the game.
“He’s going to be blown away by this,” Thibaut said.
Freeman walked through his new home, taking in every detail. He now has a message for veterans like him.
“If you’re unable to fulfill all your duties, ask for help. There’s somebody that will support you,” Freeman said.
A crowd cheered and welcomed Freeman home as he celebrated the milestone. Freeman says what he’s most looking forward to is firing up the grill and making more memories in his new, forever home.
“I feel blessed. Really do,” Freeman said. “God has been good. He’s been great.”
