A man who opened fire outside an Orange County strip club last week, injuring two people, may have been trying to protect his son, according to his lawyer. Miguel Umana, 44, was in court Wednesday for a hearing on whether he would be allowed to post bond and get out of jail. Umana is facing two charges for attempted murder in the shooting at Le Palace Gentleman’s Club on South Orange Blossom Trail.Prosecutors played surveillance video from the club that shows a group of men fighting in the street in front of Le Palace. They said one of them was Umana’s son, who can be seen throwing a punch at a man on the ground before another man walks into frame with his arm outstretched and what appears to be a gun flashing multiple times.The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says the men were all involved in a fight inside Le Palace and had been kicked out. Umana allegedly went to his car and drove to the front of the club before coming back with a gun. The victims were shot in the chest and the back but survived. A security guard then shot Umana four times and put him in handcuffs.Umana’s defense attorney argued the video does not show what led up to the shooting or whether Umana could have been trying to protect his son from being attacked. He said prosecutors could not prove who was doing what in the video.“There’s absolutely no evidence of who is who in any of the discovery presented to the court. We don’t know who the people in this video are,” lawyer Jeffrey Stone said.Prosecutors said eight bullet casings were found at the scene but they have not been tested to determine from which gun they were fired. Investigators have said Umana admitted to firing twice.Judge James Craner ruled Umana would not be given a bond and will remain in the Orange County jail until trial.
