TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Organizers gathered outside the Leon County Courthouse as a judge held a hearing inside for an emergency injunction challenging the map approved after the recent special legislative session.
Organizing Director of Florida For All, Chanae Jackson, said they want to inform the community. “What we are here to do is to make sure that our voices are heard, to make sure people understand that what is happening is actually illegal. It is a violation of the Constitution,” the organizing director said.
Jackson was one of several speakers at the rally, along with Florida Representative Angie Nixon but Gov. DeSantis said the map does not violate Florida’s constitution. Some of the same groups involved today plan to head to Alabama this weekend in Selma and Montgomery for more rallies.
Director of Expanding Democracy at Florida Rising, Teresa Guzman that gatherings like these are important.
“One of the things that we work with in democracy is redistricting because that is how power is built. How are we represented? How is this process? And we vehemently believe that this process is unconstitutional,” Guzman said.
After the rally, some went across the street with Rep. Nixon to the state capitol and held a sit-in protest outside the governor’s office, demanding he speak with them over their concerns. As the protest continued, Capitol Police could be seen with a speaker playing a pre-recorded message warning those in the area to leave or risk being arrested.
According to one protest official, at least two people were taken into custody from the scene, but WCTV has not been able to independently confirm any arrests.
As for the emergency injunction hearing, no decision on the motion had been announced as of Friday evening.
