A moment of silence was held Friday night to honor 13-year-old Colton Remsburg, who died after a pickup truck hit him while he was riding his electric scooter on Mother’s Day in south Lake Nona.Remsburg’s family was surrounded by teammates and staff with Lake Nona Youth Sports at Heroes Community Park, where Colton was supposed to play a flag football game Friday night.”On Friday nights, we ordinarily have flag football, but we turned flag football into a memorial for Colton,” said Chaston Williams, director of tackle football and football commissioner with Lake Nona Youth Sports.Williams was one of Colton’s former coaches and spoke on the family’s behalf. “Colton was known as a loving son, devoted brother, and a promising athlete,” Williams said. “He loved to fish, he loved to play football, and more than anything, he loved his family.”Williams described Colton as a kid who made everything brighter.”Colton carried a strength and warmth that lifted the people closest to him, and the bond he shared with them was unmistakable. His friends adored him, and he carried a light within him that touched everyone fortunate to know him,” Williams said.Colton grew up playing on the organization’s fields.”He played flag football with us for many years, and this season was meant to be his first year of tackle football,” Williams said. “He was a fierce competitor, the kind of kid who gave everything he had. But he also brought the jokes, the laughter, and the joy that made every practice feel lighter.”Family friends said Colton was riding his electric scooter to a store to buy flowers for his mom on Mother’s Day when the crash happened. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2021 Ram 1500 was traveling eastbound on Moss Park Road and approaching Savannah Pines Drive in the outside lane when Colton, who was traveling north on his electric scooter, entered the eastbound lanes. Troopers said Colton entered the direct path of the truck and was not in a marked crosswalk. The front of the truck struck him, according to FHP.Colton was transported to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in critical condition. He died from his injuries on Wednesday.The driver, a 35-year-old man from Panama City Beach, was not injured and remained on scene.With Colton’s death, the case has been assigned to FHP’s traffic homicide investigation section as a delayed fatality. The crash remains under investigation.
