LONGWOOD, Fla. – The City of Longwood is considering a measure that would substantially increase water and wastewater utility rates for residents.
On Monday, commissioners will take up the first reading of an ordinance that would more than double water system rates over the next three years.
According to the city manager, a comprehensive study found revisions to existing rates and fees were needed to support ongoing operations, maintenance, regulatory compliance, and future capital infrastructure needs.
If approved, the monthly price for residential water meters would go from $15.29 to $35.30 by October 2029. Volume rates would also more than double during the same time frame.
The ordinance also establishes an annual automatic utility rate adjustment beginning in October 2030. The adjustment would be tied to the Consumer Price Index and capped at 5%.
According to the city manager, the proposed ordinance is intended to support future capital improvements, including funding for a new water treatment plant.
Commissioners will hear the first reading of the ordinance during their meeting on Monday at 6 p.m. A second reading is scheduled for June 1.
