TAMPA — City Councilman Luis Viera has announced he will leave his District 7 post later this year and seek election to the Florida House of Representatives in District 67.
Viera has represented District 7 on the Tampa City Council for nearly a decade, serving communities across New Tampa, North Tampa, and the Fowler and Busch area.
“Serving District 7 and the City of Tampa has been a great honor,” Viera said. “This is my hometown. I grew up here, I raised my son here, and I have spent every day on City Council fighting for the people and neighborhoods that I grew up around. From backing our cops, firefighters and veterans to expanding park opportunities to fighting for flood victims to giving people with intellectual disabilities a voice in local government, I have always tried to lead with heart on issues that I care about — with a commitment to getting things done.
“As I take this next step to run for the Florida House, I do so with deep gratitude for the trust Tampa has placed in me and an unwavering commitment to keep fighting for our community from my heart,” he said.
His service includes helping secure funding for three new fire stations in North and New Tampa, fighting for post-hurricane housing assistance after Hurricanes Helene and Milton and serving three terms as chairman of Hillsborough Area Regional Transit.
He said his campaign for House District 67 will focus on affordability, public safety, infrastructure, disability rights, veterans, and delivering practical results for Hillsborough County families.
Viera will resign from Tampa City Council on Nov. 2.
