If you see military action taking place in downtown Tampa this week, don’t be alarmed — they’re just demonstrations for Special Operations Forces (SOF) Week.

Every year, the conference hosts a slate of speakers, exhibits, networking events and demonstrations, bringing together more than 19,000 military personnel from across the world. This year, the event runs from May 18-21.

SOF Week is expected to generate more than $19 million for the city of Tampa and the surrounding region.

Whether you’re part of the Special Operations community or you’re just trying to get around downtown Tampa this week, here’s what you should know about SOF Week.

Military demonstration in Tampa

While events will be happening all week, the USSOCOM Capability Demonstration will cause the most commotion on Wednesday.

The demonstration is set for noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, in the marina basin adjacent to the Tampa Convention Center.

Those in the area can expect to hear loud noises along the waterfront on both Tuesday and Wednesday as warplanes fly overhead, helicopters buzz through downtown and military vessels take over the water. More than 100 service members will take part in a mock scenario defending Tampa from invaders.

The marina basin at the Tampa Convention Center will be closed to all boat traffic Tuesday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during demonstrations.

Downtown Tampa road closures

Franklin Street is closed outside the Tampa Convention Center from Channelside Drive to Harbour Island (including the Harbour Island Bridge) from:

Monday, May 18 – Thursday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Friday, May 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Northbound Franklin Street, the Water Street intersection and Harbour Island Bridge will reopen at 1 p.m. Friday.

Drivers can use the Beneficial Drive Bridge (heading toward Sparkman Wharf and The Florida Aquarium) as an alternate route.

Downtown Tampa parking garage closed

The Tampa Convention Center Parking Garage will remain closed through Thursday, May 21. Alternate parking is available at the Pam Iorio Parking Garage.
