JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Authorities say thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into a tributary of the New River in Jacksonville early this morning.
The city says 35,751 gallons of sewage got into Mill Creek near Dewitt Street.
It happened around 2:30 a.m. due to a by-pass pump malfunction. The city says it was stopped around 8:00 a.m. by changing a relay on the primary pump.
Crews have used chlorine tablets, and pelletized lime and they will continue to sample in multiple locations until the counts clear up.
The city says public drinking water was never compromised.
