The former president of the University of Alabama is one step closer to leading another major state flagship school in the SEC.
Stuart Bell is the sole finalist for president of the University of Florida, according to UF’s news site.
“Dr. Bell possesses the qualities that make him a perfect fit for the University of Florida, including strong academic credentials and a proven track record of athletic success,” said Rahul Patel, the presidential search advisory committee chair.
“With his experience at the helm of a flagship university, fundraising abilities, and deep relationships across higher education, within the Southeastern Conference, and beyond, we are confident Dr. Bell will transition seamlessly into this new role and build on UF’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading public universities.”
Bell will be the 14th president of the university, based in Gainesville, with a student population of about 61,000, according to UF’s planning and institutional research.
Bell was one of the longest-serving presidents at UA and oversaw major shifts at the university, including a then-record-setting enrollment of more than 40,000 students and gaining R1 research status from Carnegie Classification.
After 10 years as president, Bell stepped down in January 2025. He was a finalist for president at Texas A&M University in February 2025.
Peter Mohler replaced Bell as the president of UA in June 2025.
