If you needed an example of why the Tampa Bay Rowdies went out and acquired MD Myers this offseason as a centerpiece for its new-look attack, Saturday night’s two-goal performance against Miami FC was another example.
The standout forward’s first goal late in the first half – a turning volley off Charlie Ostrem’s angled delivery – was superb, while his second 66 seconds into the second half showed his burst to get away from a potential marker and finish with a powerful header.
“MD is one of the best goalscorers in this league and he’s going to prove that here,” said Rowdies Head Coach Dominic Casciato. “I think his first goal was really well taken. His second was even better. I’m delighted for MD and I’m confident there’s many more goals to come.”
At just 25 years old, Myers has recorded 59 professional goals across all competitions, building on his outstanding rookie season with New York City FC II in MLS NEXT Pro to reach 40 goals in the USL Championship, USL Cup and U.S. Open Cup since the start of the 2024 season.
The bad news for opponents? He’s been joined in Tampa Bay by a group of players that’s turning into an absolute wagon for the currently undefeated Eastern Conference leaders. The Rowdies are now the only team in the USL Championship or League One with six players that have tallied multiple goals this season, pushing the team to an average of 1.86 Expected Goals per 90 minutes this season.
With a clear intent to battle for all three pieces of silverware available to the side this season, Tampa Bay’s attacking depth is driving it forward toward those aims.
