WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — As Memorial Day weekend approaches, officials say Florida’s breathtaking waterways are becoming more dangerous.

A new report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reveals that boating accidents have surged, with 694 reportable incidents in 2025, an increase from the previous two years.

Officials reported that 51 lives were lost due to these accidents, and drowning accounted for over half of those fatalities. With more than a million registered boats and another million unregistered vessels on the water, officials say crowding is a critical issue that raises the risks for everyone.

According to the report, personal watercraft, such as jet skis, were involved in 12 deaths and nearly 25% of all reported crashes.

Adding to the danger, officials say alcohol and drugs contributed to 14% of boating-related deaths.

As families gear up for holiday fun, officials are sounding the alarm, urging all boaters to stay vigilant and prioritize safety. Here’s how officials say you can help keep the waterways safe:

Always Wear a Life Jacket: This simple step is crucial; drowning was the leading cause of last year’s boating deaths.Stay Alert on Crowded Waters: Being aware of your surroundings can prevent accidents.Say No to Alcohol: Avoid drinking while operating a boat.Check Weather Conditions: Always confirm the forecast before hitting the water.Take a Boating Safety Course: Educate yourself to enhance your skills and knowledge.Create a Float Plan: Inform family or friends about your destination and estimated return time.
