ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A man convicted in connection with the deadly 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Day shooting in Fort Pierce is expected back in court Tuesday morning for sentencing.

Kemmye Parson was found guilty earlier this year for his role in the mass shooting at Ilous Ellis Park that left one woman dead and several others injured during a large community celebration.

The shooting happened on Jan. 16, 2023, when gunfire erupted during an MLK Day event packed with families and children. Cellphone video captured the chaos as people ran for cover and screamed while shots rang out across the park.

Investigators said 29-year-old Nikkitia Bryant was killed after being caught in the crossfire. Multiple others were hurt in the shooting, which prosecutors tied to gang-related violence.

A jury convicted Parson in February. Sentencing was initially delayed after his defense attorney filed a motion seeking a new trial. That motion postponed the sentencing hearing while the court reviewed the request.

Tuesday’s hearing is expected to include arguments from both prosecutors and defense attorneys before the judge hands down Parson’s sentence. Victim impact statements may also be presented in court.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Lucie County courthouse. CBS12 News will have a crew inside the courtroom covering the proceedings. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
