TAMPA, Fla (WFLA) — Three people were gunned down at a San Diego Mosque on Monday. Local law enforcement say they are closely monitoring the situation there and keeping an eye on things here as well.

The two suspects in the shooting were found dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Hassan Sultan is the Imam at The Muslim Connection in Tampa. He said they want safety for all people, and wants to see dialogue and more outreach to help combat situations like this.

“The feeling is like any other father or mother. That I want safety for my kids, I want to be able to go into a place to feel peace, and secure and not think about looking over my head, or is somebody going to come. So we want to make sure that we put things in place where we have security, but more importantly a system in place where people don’t feel that they can just come and harm and kill innocent people,” said Sultan.

Meanwhile there is a very active investigation in San Diego. Law enforcement there said there are unfortunate risks associated with religious facilities across the country.

“No one in our city should live in fear because of their identity, their faith, or their place of learning,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria.

Law enforcement said there was no specific threat made to the Islamic Center of San Diego. Three people were killed. They said a 17 and 18-year-old are the alleged suspects, and they were also found dead.

“It’s being investigated as a hate crime at this point. There was definitely hate rhetoric that was involved,” said Police Chief Scott Wahl.

Investigators said the mother of the 17-year-old gunman told police her son was suicidal and that he, along with her car and several of her guns, were missing. She told police he was wearing camouflage and was with another person, which police say led them to believe he may be a threat to the public.

Police said one of the victims was a security guard and helped keep the situation from getting worse.

“I don’t want to speculate, but at this point, I think it’s fair to say his his actions were heroic and undoubtedly he saved lives today,” said Wahl.

Sultan said they work with local law enforcement to protect their Mosque.

“Stay in touch with other institutions and mosques and making sure we have safety and security for places of worship to the best of our ability,” said Sultan.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office said they routinely conduct “patrols at places of worship across Hillsborough County as part of our ongoing commitment to public safety. We remain in communication with the community and faith leaders and will continue monitoring for any potential threats. We encourage anyone who sees suspicious activity to contact law enforcement immediately.”

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office said they are closely monitoring the situation in San Diego but is not increasing patrols at this time.
