A Jacksonville man is facing charges after police said a car struck the side of a house Monday.
Nicole Riley said she was sleeping around 4:40 a.m. Monday in her house in the 700 block of North Prairie Street when she heard a loud sound.
“I woke up very abruptly. I thought it was the loudest thunderclap I’d ever heard,” Riley said. “And then I started seeing people outside and hearing talking, and I stepped outside my front door, and there was a car next to me against my building.”
Police said the driver was speeding and went off the road.
The house still is habitable. Riley said she’s doing work to make sure the home stays safe.
People often ignore a four-way stop at West Lafayette Avenue and North Prairie Street near her house, Riley said, often enough that it made her nervous someone would strike her house.
“I will say this intersection right here, people just fly all the time,” Riley said. “I mean it’s a four-way. I’m not sure what else could be done to control it other than increased patrol, you know, but this intersection in general is awful.”
She was surprised the driver was going southbound on North Prairie Street.
“It made so much less sense that it happened from this side,” Riley said.
Darius Kidd, 22, of Jacksonville was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and reckless driving. He was booked into the Morgan County jail and later released under state pre-trial guidelines.
A court date has not been set.
