A 20-month-old child is in critical condition after a drowning incident Tuesday night in a Port St. Lucie neighborhood, according to police.Officers with the Port St. Lucie Police Department responded around 9 p.m. on May 19, 2026, to the 3200 block of Southwest Crumpacker Street following reports of a possible child drowning.Investigators say a 19-year-old family member had opened a rear sliding glass door to let the family dogs outside and may have accidentally left it slightly ajar. At some point afterward, the toddler, a 20-month-old girl, appears to have left the home unnoticed.She was later found submerged in a detached above-ground swimming pool in the backyard, police said.The child’s father discovered her and immediately alerted the child’s mother, who began performing CPR while calling for help. Responding officers noted the mother was actively performing lifesaving measures when they arrived at the scene.A neighbor who heard the family’s calls for help also contacted 911 and rushed over to assist until emergency crews arrived.The child was first taken by ambulance to Tradition Medical Center, where she was stabilized before being airlifted to Nemours Children’s Hospital. Authorities say she remains in critical condition.Police say the exact amount of time the child was unaccounted for before being found is still under investigation.No further details have been released at this time.
