MAITLAND, Fla. — Crews continue to evaluate repair options for a 45-foot-wide sinkhole that opened up and swallowed a section of Wymore Road in Maitland last week.
On Monday, crews poured 18,000 gallons of water into the hole in an attempt to see how stable it is. City officials said that if the sinkhole held the water, crews would simply fill in the area and rebuild the road. Unfortunately, crews noted that the water drained away, meaning more assessments would need to take place before work to fix the roadway could start.
 
The sinkhole near I-4 in Maitland — which officials say is 45 feet by 40 feet — has shut down Wymore Road in both directions north of Maitland Boulevard, and city officials said drivers should avoid the area until further notice.
Crews were back at the site Tuesday to continue work that will help determine how they will move forward with repairs.
Officials say the sinkhole is not currently affecting or threatening nearby homes.
