FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital will host a special event this week to recognize trauma survivors and the medical teams who helped save their lives.

The hospital is marking National Trauma Survivors Day on Wednesday, May 20, with an afternoon dedicated to celebrating the strength, resilience, and recovery of patients across the Treasure Coast.

Officials say the event will bring together survivors, families, and healthcare professionals for a program focused on reflection, connection, and hope. Attendees will hear personal stories of recovery, connect with trauma care specialists, and learn more about the journey many patients face after life-threatening injuries.

Among the featured speakers is Eddie Jarmakowicz, a local survivor whose recovery after a shark bite has become a powerful example of perseverance. Hospital leaders say his experience underscores the importance of rapid emergency response, expert surgical care, and long-term rehabilitation.

The event will also include a video message from Port St. Lucie Police Senior Sergeant Erik Levasseur, highlighting the critical role first responders play and their close coordination with trauma teams in saving lives.

In addition to honoring survivors, the hospital will recognize the physicians, nurses, and staff who make up its trauma program. Officials say their expertise and compassion are essential in guiding patients through recovery and helping them rebuild their lives.

Hospital leaders say the event serves as a reminder that survival is only the beginning—and that recovery is made possible through a combination of skilled care, community support, and determination.
