A third person has been arrested in connection with a murder-for-hire plot out of California that investigators believe has a Central Florida connection. Kai Cordrey, 26, was arrested to face charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder, the LA County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. According to investigators, the alleged plot stemmed from a long-running custody and visitation dispute between Avery and Gabriela Gonzalez, to which Francisco Gonzalez allegedly remarked “it would all be cheaper if Avery were dead.” Cordrey now appears in the narrative as Gabriela Gonzalez’s “then-boyfriend” during the alleged events described therein, the latest news release describes. Francisco Gonzalez is accused of sending the $10,000 to Cordrey in 2021 “as front money to use in locating, hiring and paying someone to kill Avery,” the release states. An undercover law-enforcement officer posing as a hitman allegedly spoke with Cordrey about the plot, with the conversation reportedly about payment and proof of death, with Avery as the target, authorities said. Cordrey was further accused in a later conversation during which he allegedly told the undercover officer that Gabriela Gonzalez wanted the murder to occur and that Francisco Gonzalez could pay for it, according to the release. “This was a lengthy investigation that was initiated by the FBI and eventually turned over to our office, resulting in criminal charges being filed today,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. “This is a case where the defendants are accused of going to great lengths to find someone to commit murder. Most fathers raise their children to respect the law, but here we have a dad who allegedly helped his daughter and her boyfriend break the law in the most sinister way imaginable.” Gabriela Gonzalez was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in California while Francisco Gonzalez, who appeared before a Seminole County judge on Tuesday, was still awaiting extradition at the time of this report, according to the release. The three suspects face sentences of 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
