Memorial Day Events and Ceremonies

Cities across South Florida will commemorate the sacrifice of military servicemen and women throughout our nation’s history.

Pompano Beach – The Fort Lauderdale Symphonic Winds will perform Songs to Honor America, May 27, 7 p.m. at the Pompano Beach Elks Lodge, 4000 NE 10 Way. The concert is free but food and drinks will be available for sale.

Deerfield Beach – The city’s annual ceremony will be held May 23, 10 a.m. at the Butler House, 380 E. Hillsboro Blvd.

Pompano Beach – The city’s annual parade will be held May 25, 9 a.m. at Wells Fargo, 2401 E. Atlantic Blvd., and proceeds to the municipal cemetery, 400 SE 23 Ave., where a ceremony will be held.

Fort Lauderdale – The city’s annual Great American Beach Party will be held May 23, 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Las Olas Oceanside Park, 3000 E. Las Olas Blvd. It will include live bands, water slides, a kids zone, a classic car show, an art show, a sand sculpting contest, a SOCOM Para-Commandos parachute jump, a military tribute and more. Pompano Beach – American Legion Post 142, 171 SW 2 St., will host its annual BBQ and Car Show, May 25, 12 to 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to donate $15.

Deerfield Beach – American Legion Post 162, 820 SE 8 Ave., will host a BBQ May 25, 1 to 5 p.m. The live music will start at 2 p.m. Attendees will be asked to make a donation.

Fort Lauderdale – The city’s annual ceremony will be held May 25, 9 a.m. at Lauderdale Memorial Park Cemetery, 2001 SW 4 Ave.

Oakland Park – The city’s annual ceremony will be held May 25, 11 a.m. at American Legion Post 222, 4250 NE 5 Ave.

America 250

Pompano Beach – The Sample-McDougald House, 450 NE 10 St., will celebrate America’s 250th birthday and the anniversary of the house, built in 1916, May 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be live music, a bounce house and games, raffles, food and more. The cost is $10 for adults. Children get free admission.

Wilton Manors – The Richard C. Sullivan Public Library is open again.

Story Time and More

Deerfield Beach – A family event featuring story time, a sundae bar, and an art activity happens May 30, 2:30 p.m. at the Museum of Black History, 380 E. Hillsboro Blvd. Call 954-429-0378 for more information.

Art Experiences 

Deerfield Beach – The Cultural Center, 84 SE 4 Ave., hosts two art classes for adults. On May 26, 7:30 p.m. a workshop for aspiring painters at all levels will be held. The fee is $45 and includes all supplies. Students take home an abstract painting. On May 29, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Mark Lewkowicz teaches a Paint and Sip class. The fee is $25. Car Show

Fort Lauderdale – Hooters will host the Cruisin Wings car show, May 26, 6 to 9 p.m. at 6345 N. Andrews Ave. There will also be music, raffle prizes, and food specials. 

Dive Into Summer 

LBTS –  Dive Into Summer is expanding into a two-day event, taking place Friday, May 29 (5 to 9 p.m.) and Saturday, May 30 (5 to 10 p.m.) at El Prado Park, 4500 El Mar Drive. Friday evening will include bands in El Prado Park with bar service provided by Scuba4Good, while Saturday is enhanced with an artisan vendor village, comprised of local, community-based merchants, as well as a dining zone.

Pompano Beach – The Pompano Beach Garden Club meets the second Monday of the month at the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center, 1801 NE 6 St. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. for a meet and greet and the meetings start at 1 p.m. Each month there is a speaker, plants for sale, and raffles.
