Florida attorney John Morgan is advocating for the creation of a new political party to offer an alternative for Americans who feel the Republican and Democratic parties have become too polarized. Morgan has set up a $100,000 contest for name submissions with an entry deadline of 11:59 p.m. on June 2 and the announcement of the winning name is planned for June 16.Morgan said he is building the party to foster compromise between the two major parties. “Time to name this third party is running out,” he said. “I’m building this party so they can compromise with both sides, Republicans and Democrats.” The idea has drawn mixed reactions. Colin Meagher, a Republican from Fort Myers, expressed doubts about the success of a third party. “Historically, third parties have had very limited influence in the USA,” Meagher said. He referenced past examples like Theodore Roosevelt, who ran as a third-party candidate in the Progressive Party but lost, and Ross Perot, who ran under the Reform Party and also failed to win. Florida currently has 15 registered minor political parties, but Colin Cosgrove, of Fort Myers, believes the two major parties maintain tight control over the system. “I think that Democrats and Republicans have a very tight control over the political system in the United States,” Cosgrove said. Some younger voters see potential in a third party. Stephania Ulysse, of Fort Myers, said, “I think as younger people we have a lot of opinions that differ from the older people who associate themselves with Democratic and Republican.” Alan Flores, also from Fort Myers, hopes a third party could better represent his generation’s beliefs. “I feel like if there was a third party we could connect with more that understood what we relate to and our beliefs, it would be better for us,” Flores said. As for the name of the party, Cosgrove suggested something appealing to younger voters. “I think New Party Independent, staying along that line where people can recognize it and keeping it fresh would be great for young voters,” he said.
