FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—A Fort Myers bookstore rescued hundreds of books from being thrown away by the Lee County School District.
Blinking Owl Books in Fort Myers received a call from a customer who reported that Estero High School was about to discard dumpsters full of books. The school district confirmed this is an annual practice to dispose of old and damaged books.
The store’s owner, Lucy Perkins-Wagel, didn’t want to see the books go to waste. She coordinated with the school and rescued as many books as possible.
Perkins-Wagel said reading is an important part of learning and kids should have access to books.
The store now plans to distribute the rescued books for free throughout the community. Blinking Owl Books specializes in fantasy, horror and science fiction, and the collection just grew by several hundred titles.
